Four Kinds of Life Insurance, Explained

Final Expense

Burial insurance

A smaller whole life policy with one job: the bills that land on a family at the end of a life. A funeral or cremation, leftover medical bills, and the small debts somebody has to settle.

Whole Life

Coverage for life

Coverage for the rest of your life, as long as the premium is paid. The premium is usually set when you buy and doesn’t rise with age, and the policy builds cash value over time.

Term Life

For a set term

Coverage for a fixed period, often 10, 15 or 20 years. It usually costs less for the same amount, but it ends — and most companies stop offering new term policies past a certain age.

IUL

Indexed universal life

Permanent coverage whose cash value earns interest linked to a stock market index, up to a cap, with a floor against index losses. Payments can be flexible, but fees apply and the policy has to stay funded.

  • No Medical Exam? Many plans ask health questions over the phone instead. Some are built for people who’ve been turned down before.
  • What a Funeral Costs$8,300Median funeral with a viewing and burial in 2023; $6,280 for a funeral with cremation.Source: National Funeral Directors Association

Coverage, eligibility, and cost depend on your age, health, and the state you live in. Not everyone will qualify for every plan.

Why call us

We Make Life Insurance Easier

Easier to Qualify

  • Often No Medical ExamMany plans ask a few health questions over the phone instead. No doctor visit, no blood work.
  • Options After a “No”Some plans are built for people with health history. They usually cost more and may have a waiting period.

Easier to Afford

  • Payments That Stay PutWith most whole life and final expense plans, the premium is set when you buy and doesn’t go up.
  • Several Companies ComparedWe’re independent, so you see prices from more than one insurance company, side by side.

Easier to Decide

  • Real Answers on the First CallA licensed agent can usually tell you what you may qualify for, and what it would cost, before you hang up.
  • A Free Second OpinionAlready have a policy? We’ll go through it with you, and tell you honestly if keeping it is the right call.

Why independent

Calling One Insurance Company, or Calling Us

An insurance company can only tell you about its own plans. Here’s the honest difference — including the one thing they can do that we can’t.

Plans you hear about
One insurance company: Their own only
Life Policy Desk: Several companies
Kinds of coverage
One insurance company: What they sell
Life Policy Desk: All four types
If you’re turned down
One insurance company: Start over
Life Policy Desk: We check others
A second opinion on your policy
One insurance company: Their own plans
Life Policy Desk: Free review

About us

Why We’re Called a Desk

A desk is somewhere you can walk up to with a question and get a straight answer. That’s the whole idea.

Check us before you buy. Ask your agent for their full name and license number, and look them up on your state insurance department’s website. A real agent won’t mind.

FAQ

What People Usually Ask First

Are You My Insurance Company?

We are an independent insurance agency, not an insurance company.

We cannot look up your policy, take a premium payment, change your coverage, or update your beneficiaries. For any of those, call your insurance company directly using the number on your policy or your bill.

What we can do is review your policy with you, for free, and tell you whether it’s still the right fit.

Can You Review a Policy I Already Have?

Yes, for free, whichever company it’s with. We can’t see your insurer’s records, so have your latest statement or your policy papers nearby when you call. The agent will explain what you have and what it would pay.

Often the honest answer is to keep what you have, and if so, that’s what we’ll tell you.

Am I Too Old to Get Coverage?

Not necessarily. Many final expense plans accept new applicants into their 80s. The exact cut-off depends on the insurance company and the plan, and the agent can tell you which ones you can apply for.

How Much Will It Cost?

It depends on your age, your health, how much coverage you want and the state you live in — which is why there are no prices on this page. Anyone quoting you a price before they know those things is guessing. The agent can give you real numbers on the call.

Coverage, eligibility, and cost depend on your age, health, and the state you live in. Not everyone will qualify for every plan.

Will My Payment Go Up as I Get Older?

With most whole life and final expense plans, no — the premium is set when you buy and stays the same. Term life is different: when the term ends, renewing usually costs much more. Ask the agent which kind you’re looking at.

Will I Need a Medical Exam?

Often not. Many final expense and whole life plans ask health questions over the phone instead. Some larger policies do need an exam, and the agent will tell you up front.

What If I’ve Been Turned Down Before?

Some plans are built for people who’ve been turned down elsewhere. They usually cost more for the same amount of coverage, and because we work with several companies, a “no” from one doesn’t end the conversation.

Some final expense plans pay only a limited benefit if death from natural causes happens in the first two years. Your agent will tell you whether a plan works this way before you apply.

Can I Buy a Policy for My Mom or Dad?

You can help them shop, and you’re welcome on the call. But your parent has to take part: in almost every case the person being insured answers the health questions and agrees to the policy themselves. It works best if you call together.

Is the Call Free?

Yes, and you’re under no obligation to buy anything.

The call is free. If you decide to buy a policy, the licensed agent you spoke with is paid a commission by the insurance company.

How Do I Know You’re a Real Agency?

Fair question — there are plenty of look-alike sites. The Life Policy Desk is operated by One Life Enrollment LLC.

Before you buy anything, ask your agent for their full name and license number and look them up on your state insurance department’s website. A real agent won’t mind you checking.

Still Not Sure? That’s What the Call Is For.
